Toby Watkins
My name is Toby Watkins, I’m 23 years old originally from Newbury in Berkshire but now based in West London. I began modelling when I was 16 years old, but always just did it on the side alongside school etc. Last year was my first full year doing it full time. My biggest hobby is videography, something which is now also a job / side hustle. Whenever I watched music videos/ films etc I always loved getting that “hairs up on the back of your neck” feeling - and that’s what drove me to want to make my own edits, so I could get other people to feel that same way. Aside from that, my favourite things to do are to spend time with my friends and family (been tough this year..!) and to go to the pub.
When did you start modelling?
I started modelling when I was 16 for a kids clothing brand called Johnnie B - after seeing an opportunity in modelling, I went on the hunt for an agent and signed in London when I was 17.
How did you get scouted?
Years later, I then got scouted by IMG whilst in a meeting
Who are the models you aspire to?
Matthew Noska always smashes it, I don't know him personally but he looks like he has a good head on his shoulders and a strong work ethic.
What would be your dream modelling job?
Calvin Klein Jeans campaign or Tommy Hilfiger one of the classics
In an industry that is based on appearances, how do you handle negative comments and rejection?
It is definitely something that gets to me from time to time, however you have just got to remember that you're not going to be right for every client.
From your perspective, how do you think the fashion industry can improve?
Sustainability is definitely something that needs to be improved throughout. I think with social media, more and more people are becoming fixated on having a "fresh" outfit in every picture. When actually we should be investing money in the quality of our clothes rather than the quantity.
What’s your favourite project/shoot you’ve done so far?
A recent shoot for Hero Magazine springs to mind, I was styled in the new season Dior accessories and the photos were composed to look like a French Renaissance painting.
Tell us something we wouldn’t know by looking at your portfolio?
Well I have had a few people say that they think I am going to be really arrogant before they meet me.. I promise you I am not !
What’s your favourite feature?
My favourite character feature is how sensitive I am, it does result in a lot of worry/anxiety from time to time but it also means when things are going good I really appreciate it and cherish those special moments in life.
What’s you motto in life?
"Be nice to who you meet on the way up, because you might just meet them on the way down"
